Summary
Arthur had thought Merlin was his equal—after all, allowing a manservant to insult his prince, sometimes in public, was the highest nod towards a strong friendship between the two—but then he learns about Merlin’s magic. After the initial surge of disbelief and hurt, he comes to the jarring realisation that their relationship wasn’t truly equal after all. Arthur, unable to think of anything else that could not jeopardise Merlin’s existence in Camelot while equilibrising their relationship at the same time, he decides to let Merlin go from his services. Even though a small part of him had hoped that Merlin would be against it, joke around it and stick with Arthur. But when Merlin takes the offer and flees at first light back to Elador, Arthur is left with a lot of conflicting feelings. Perhaps, they never really truly did have a friendship.

In which Balinor is the Earl of Elador and he saves Camelot from Kilgharrah in a ball. Uther rewards him by allowing Merlin, his son, to train as a knight in Camelot. Merlin is not pleased by that decision but he stays to spite his parents. He also ends up falling in love with the Camelot's prince. A poor decision on his part.
Merlin may be the greatest wizard but he is also the greatest fool in love. He finds happiness anyways.
