Summary
Letting the 6 foot tall god-like alien into his home seemed like something he should feel advised against.
Hell, there was probably an entire protocol for it, not that he would have followed. Surprisingly, Nolan was a decent guest. Cecil didn’t consider himself an above-average host–he was ill-prepared for the company–but still Nolan never once complained; not even after days of sleeping on a stiff pull-out couch that his feet would dangle off the edge of, or when Cecil would get so annoyed from his incessant questioning of everything during their nightly TV ritual that he would shut down completely and slink off to bed soon after without so much of a grumble.
OR
Cecil is tasked with 'surveillance' of Nolan after he lands on Earth. That surveillance turns out being Nolan--with no identity or resources--crashing on Cecil's couch, learning about humanity through cable TV. Cecil tries to teach him how to cook and--with a little help from Cecil's selective attention and the freezer-life of beef--instead teaches him about the biology, fragility, and blind tenacity of humans and their nature... or at least one human's nature.

He intended to sap and stab—his practiced, familiar motion—but the vulnerability of the Texan felt less like an opportunity and a little more like an insult. His decloak ran a second less than he had intended—and the hiss of air felt louder than he would've liked.
"Wait," he said, his voice sharp enough to halt the Engineer’s momentum. The hand that held his wrench froze. "Disable your sentry."
BLU Spy comes to Engineer’s nest to sap and stab. He gives notes instead.
This is, in retrospect, where it goes wrong.

Soldier thought he'd die alone by the fight, and that was fine.
Engineer thought he'd die alone surrounded by parts he couldn't make fit, and that was alright.
Maybe that makes them perfect for each other in some roundabout way.
