“It looks like you’re having twins, actually in separate sacs.” Her tone is cool and matter-of-fact. As if she was saying the sky was blue and as if she was not delivering the news of complete and utter insanity.
Shane’s hearing has gone muffled by the time the doctor finishes speaking and he stares straight ahead to the ceiling. Words are being exchanged but his mind is unable to catch up to decipher them. PMDS. Uterus. Pregnant. Twins.
What the fuck.
Something is being smoothed over his face but he feels numb. He blinks for a moment and suddenly the brightness of the room and the voices become coherent again. It is Ilya touching his face, whispering sweet affirmations in order for him to come back into himself.
“Breathe moya lyubov. In and out. I’m here with you. Is okay.” Ilya keeps repeating these sentiments until Shane is finally present in his body enough to speak coherent sentences.
“It looks as though you are about less than 10 weeks along. We’re going to take proper measurements and provide you with the details here. But we also understand this is unprecedented for unsuspecting parents and we want to inform you of your options.” Dr Hammock says.

Summary
Shane had planned the pregnancy down to the week.
That was the joke everyone kept making, anyway. Not that it was inaccurate.
The third trimester was supposed to land perfectly during the off season so Shane could avoid flying, avoid media appearances, avoid unnecessary stress, and ideally spend the last stretch of pregnancy resting quietly at home with his husband.
Instead, the third trimester was destroying him.
He was tired all the time. Not regular tired either. Bone-deep, miserable exhaustion that made him want to cry if he had to walk upstairs twice in one day. His back hurt. His hips hurt. His knees hurt. His ribs hurt. Sometimes his skin hurt for reason.
Or. Pregnant Shane shorts.
