“How long have I been out?” Squall asked, nearing the door to listen for any noises outside.
“It’s been a day” Seifer said. “ And I don’t think they hold rescue missions for corpses, so don’t expect one. You looked pretty dead when you landed. Then the Galbadian soldiers pounced on you.”
“But I’m not, right?” Squall asked, his resolve wavering suddenly at the sickening realization that if the past several months of his life had been a dream, this could be a dream too.
“Not what?” Seifer asked, frowning as Squall’s face paled. “Dead? Are you fucking kidding?”
“I could be…” Squall said, his voice tight. “I should be, right?”
“Who the fuck cares if you are?” Seifer snapped, causing Squall to blink and pull back slightly when Seifer approached him. “Dead, alive, it doesn’t matter. You’re here, so deal with it.”
