An idea hit him and Childe hopped to his feet with a grin. “Fine, I’ll prove it to you.”
This would be a foolproof way to make a point and to prove Lumine wrong. A flawless idea. Probably the best idea he had ever had in his life.
“I don’t know what you’re planning, Childe,” she said, pulling herself up with the wall and reaching for her sword, “but it’s probably a terrible idea. Seriously, just admit that you like him because it’s obvious to anyone who sees the two of you interact.”
He spun on his heels and laughed. “So, Lumine, that’s where you’re wrong. I don’t like Zhongli as anything more than a friend, and may Celestia strike me down if I’m lying!”
Lumine’s face paled and the two of them stood there in silence for a moment, Childe ignoring his totally not rapidly beating heart. He was certain that this would be fine. There was no way he liked Zhongli like that.
“See, Lumine? I’m just fine—”
And then the lightning struck.

Childe readies himself with his fist while he slowly opens the lid. “Hello...?”
Instead of a person or a zombie inside the bin, a... thing peeks at Childe. It has beady, black eyes. Childe stares at it back. “Uh... Hey.”
The creature, or a weird-looking dog, or whatever the hell it was, tilts its head. Childe takes a step back when it pops out of the bin and drops to the ground. The creature crawls to him; it doesn’t even look scared, which is weird.
“What... are you?” Childe crouches down and takes a good look at it. He squints his eyes. Yup, it’s definitely not a dog, he nods. Most likely, it’s a lizard because it has scales, but Childe has never seen a lizard like that. It’s brown, with a dark tone. It has... this golden fur around its neck and a tail that has the same gold formed like a little cloud. It even has horns too that kind of glow, or maybe it’s just from the street lights.
It’s like... a pet you would see in a video game.
[Childe gets himself a weird pet while he's taking out the trash.]

Summary
Ever since the Osial debacle, Childe has been avoiding a certain incognito former god turned funeral parlor consultant. But not because of any ill feelings that could’ve possibly carried over from said debacle, as one might assume, but because the realization that Zhongli and Rex Lapis are one in the same led to the worst case of 20/20 hindsight whiplash that Childe has ever experienced.
The moment it came upon him caused such a visceral, gut-wrenching reaction, he immediately had to excuse himself from the meeting he’d been having with Ekaterina to retreat into his private room and scream wordlessly into his pillow. Which was then followed up with him incoherently screaming at the memory of his past self– “You idiot! Moron! You absolute clown! What the fuck have you done to yourself?! What the fuck?!”
But he had to scream in that moment– he had to, because all his mind could do was replay a highlight reel of all the times he now so deeply regretted…
“Say Zhongli… when looking at one of his statues, don’t you think Morax is probably really hot? Like, he’s absolutely stacked! And that’s only what we can see from the front!"
