    Behind a wilting strip of ash-dusted caution tape, they see him.

    Beatrice clutches to her husband’s, Daniel Harrington’s, arm tight. “Steven!” she chokes out around a sharp, too short intake of breath. Without thinking, without question, she moves one foot in front of the other. Lets her fingernails drag along Daniel’s robed arm, harsh and quick. However, right at the edge of the tape, a man in pale blue stops her.

    But Shane wasn’t referring to him as Ilya. He was saying… “You say…I look like Ilya?” Ilya clarified, unsure of what to make of this information.

     

    Shane nodded happily. “Yeah. You’ve got that whole…” he gestured a bit with his hands in a way that Ilya could not begin to interpret, “...thing.”

     

    Well, this was interesting. He bit back a smile. “Thing?” he questioned, tilting his head to the side, feigning ignorance. This would be so much fun to tease Shane about next time they talked.

     

    Shane’s bloodshot eyes widened. “Mhm. A sexy asshole vibe, you know?”

     

    Now Ilya had to laugh. “Yes, that sounds like Ilya Rozanov,” he agreed, clenching his hands to stop them from doing something embarrassing like tracing over the freckles on Shane’s face.

    Or, when Ilya visits Shane in the hospital, Shane doesn't recognize him because he's too high on pain meds. Interesting information is revealed, and these emotionally constipated boys have feelings.

    The spray paint hasn't even dried yet and Eddie's already scrubbing it off the house.

    He insisted it was a bad idea, but Frankie insisted it was karma. Karma for what, Eddie doesn't really know.

    As far as he knows, Harrington's never done anything directly to any of their group. He didn't really stop his sheep from doing stuff, but that in itself isn't a crime deserving of this punishment.

    It's not even his house. If his parents came home and saw this, Eddie's pretty sure Steve would be punished in ways that aren't fair at all for some light bullying in high school.

    He doesn't even know if Steve's home. The lights haven't been on since he got here and it's not that late. He can't possibly be sleeping.

    The paint isn't coming off.

    Headlights reflect off the window to his left and he freezes. The lights get brighter and closer.

    He turns.

    The headlights are on him. He waves.

    They shut off.

    Steve steps out of his car, but doesn't come closer. Eddie can't really see more than the shadow of him; The porch light is dim and nearly a full 25 feet away.
