Ilya hesitated, staring at the number. He was captain of Hollander’s new team. It would have been completely normal, if not expected, that he would reach out to him soon. But his hand had turned to lead, his finger hovering over the “Call” button. What would he even say?
“Hey Hollander. Sorry your team dumped you out of nowhere after building them a dynasty and you’re being shipped back to your hometown to play on an historically shitty team, captained by me, the guy who you’ve been pitted against your whole career and built up a decade’s worth of resentment towards, not to mention the fact that we sucked each other’s dicks that one time years ago and then pretended that it never happened. Haha, yeah, good times. Anyways. See you at practice.”

Regardless of your opinions on Troy and Harris in the books, I think this is a very realistic look at the types of issues that a player like Shane would face and I like the way this story examines the different nuanced layers of race and sexuality in a workplace like a professional hockey team. This story shows the different approaches that Bood (a black man), Shane (a gay Asian man), Ilya (a white Russian man) and Troy (a gay white man) all take to their careers. The things they feel they can or can't away with. The things that don't even occur to them because it's not on their radar. The ways that someone's behavior might seem mysterious because they're performing a role for their safety.
I especially like seeing the way that Ilya responds to the new information he's given by Shane. He was moving with ignorance, but once he got a new perspective he adjusted his behavior and also started looking at things through a new lens. Seeing him be supportive of his partner through this new lens without Shane needing to tell him how to be supportive was beautiful.
