Their first year at college, both brimming with nerves and optimism as they anticipated the upcoming tryouts for their respective sports. Ada had been practicing on an early Saturday morning, all elegance and grace, humming the tune she would be skating to under her breath. The tranquility she’d created was abruptly shattered; the clattering of an object hitting the ground and skittering down the steps in the stands, frantic footsteps following. Ada looked up, stopping in the middle of her practice.
A flustered boy, bulky with hockey gear, looking very awkward, was chasing his hockey stick, wincing when it hit the plastic protection separating the seats and the rink. He fumbled to pick it up, eyes flickering to Ada and away again, an embarrassed flush adorning his cheeks, when he realised she’d been watching him.

”Is there a point to this, Ada? Please, please, I’m so—”
“If you would let me finish,” Ada interrupted, voice a little firmer. Leon immediately deflated, blinking his eyes open to look dutifully up at her. “I’m just saying, you’ve been such a good girl for me.”
Leon’s brain went haywire, panic and pleasure battling in every vein of his body. He tensed under her, eyes darting over her face. This wasn’t supposed to happen. He had been hiding it so well, he thought. No one was supposed to find out.
Leon won’t be honest with herself. Ada isn’t having it.

He hadn’t cleaned his hands of the rose petals, not wanting to let go just yet. He could hold onto them for as long as he liked, unlike how he couldn’t hold onto Ada just that little bit tighter. He closed his hand over the flowers, digging his nails into his palm so fiercely that he considered the possibility of it drawing blood, imagining how it would blend in with the dark red of the roses, blurring the lines between him and Ada even further.
The surgical removal of Hanahaki means forgetting about your unrequited love. Leon is forced to let go.

At the beginning I felt a little hollow wandering the streets of San Juan, like a part of me was missing. I felt it in every new food I tried and when the temperature would drop ever so slightly. Being naive and young, I didn’t want our distance to be a lesson in independence.
