Summary
“We could pretend,” Dana says suddenly, spinning back around to face her.
It’s the most absurd proposition that Stella has ever heard. And she’s sure that’s what it is. Dana wants this from her—a night out in a date-like scenario.
“You want to go on a pretend date?” Stella asks. “That sounds like two friends having dinner.”
Dana chews on her lip for a moment before she takes a step closer, meeting her eyes with an intensity Stella hasn’t seen from her before. “Is that what you want, to be my friend?” she asks.
Stella knows then that Dana is calling her out. She knows suddenly that she hasn’t been as subtle about her feelings as she’s convinced herself she has. And she knows that it’s written all over her face right now.
“No,” she whispers, holding Dana’s eyes with her own.
...
Or: Dana asks Stella on a date, but Stella doesn't date. Maybe for one night, she can pretend.

Summary
The scale that’s been balancing so precariously between us suddenly shifts. The weights clang sharply as they fall to one side. And inside my head, I hear something else, something that shocks me, but is clear as day. I hear my heart whisper fiercely to my brain, “Go fuck yourself. It’s my turn now.” And even more shockingly, I think my brain agrees.
