“I didn’t want to lie to you too,” Brian said. “I don’t do that and I’m not gonna start. But I need to get – out. Away. I don’t know.”
He sighed and rubbed at his forehead.
There was a strange sound from the other end of the line, like something – maybe the phone itself – was being fumbled by a body in motion. “Trixie, are you okay?” Katya said, and then, in the same breath, “Can I come over? I want to come over. I think maybe I should come over.”

Summary
Trixie stared out to the horizon, the last of the sun's rapidly disappearing rays casting golden shadows over his face. He stretched out lazily, full and long like a cat, warmth of the day seeped into his bones and sore thighs. They’d been riding all day. He looked over at Katya, shoulders slumped, smoking slowly, a small smile pulling at his mouth as they made eye contact. The smoke from Katya’s cigarettes always burned his eyes. He never showed it.

Summary
“I know who you are, all right?” Trixie says. He shifts his balance. Knife, lyre, sachet of holy herbs, wineskin. He marks them mentally on his body, makes a sundial of himself, tells time by the tools he carries.
Katya strokes the bird’s tiny head. “Oooh.” He’s mocking him, his eyes bright with laughter. Trixie knows calm is the deadliest weapon in his arsenal, but it’s one of the few he hasn’t mastered.
“Yeah,” he goes on, “and your whole thing isn’t gonna work on me.”
“Oooooh!” He waggles his fingers in the air. “Not my whole thing!”
Trixie's a champion on an endless tour of the sea. Katya's a witch living on an enchanted island. The rest is (ancient Greek) history.
