“Sometimes I forget that you’re gone.” Abby says, her eyes are looking at the swingset that Frank built four years ago, before the kids could even swing on it. “And then it’s days like today where I’m reminded.” she looks down now at the glass of lemonade maybe wishing it was something else.
“I know.” Frank says even more quietly. His finger taps against the glass, he looks up at the sky, it’s hot outside but there’s a slight breeze and he closes his eyes. He remembers when Tanner was born he would sit outside here on the porch with him against his chest because it felt like the only place he could breathe, it was before he messed up his back, he could slouch in the chair for hours without his back hurting. Everything was so different now.

Harry sits in the rocking chair, she’s laying against his chest, and he looks at her magical little room, full to the brim with protection wards, he might have gone overboard with them, but there’s something to be said about protecting a defenseless child when you were once defenseless child yourself. No cupboards, no spiders in the corner as your only friends, no messed up toys, no darkness. The ceiling is charmed at night to light up with constellations and stars so she’d never be alone.

Harry’s Patronus changed. For the first year after the war he never saw his stag. By year two he was too scared to do it. By year three he missed his stag like an old friend. By year four he thought the war was over, what was the need for the Patronus charm in his arsenal anyway? He still missed his stag, but he could always use an owl, and no one was trying to kill him. Harry wouldn’t know by years five to eight after the war he’d never see his stag again. He thinks that if he knew that he might have plucked up that Gryffindor courage to say that incantation again. In reality, it would take eleven years to see his Patronus again.

A lot can happen in eleven years, he said, finishing his cup of coffee. Dan and Phil had lived a full life. It wasn’t always happy, but nothing can ever truly be happy, but it was finding the happiness and the light in those dark places.
When Dan finished talking, when all the words had come out, Evelyn had looked at him the same way that she looked at him back at that last session, a mix of pride and unbridled joy that Dan had grown up. He had grown up and become the person that his twenty-one year old self had been so scared of, the sixteen year old self he would have been proud of, and the twenty-five year old he almost gave up on if it hadn’t been for those around him to remind him that he was loved.

It had, obviously, been Harry to come up with the idea of them pretending to meet each other for the first time, Draco had raised an eyebrow at the thought, but went along with it, because Harry was excited about it, but he knew himself too much to know that it wouldn’t last long. They had been together for almost a decade, had a whole life and a home together, but it never felt like they got enough time. Draco indulged Harry in a lot of things, he felt it was the least he could do, because he loved him, but Draco liked that they were no longer playing those games anymore.

You couldn’t find Steve Harrington without Tommy Hagan trailing behind him. Steve might have been the charm but Tommy Hagan had always been the brains, their eighth grade teacher would later say at Tommy’s funeral.
All Steve could really remember from that day was the way that everyone turned their head around when he had showed up to the chapel late wearing his dad’s suit because he outgrew the ones that he owned. Steve never got the job that his dad had promised him because he messed up so bad with school, so here he was wearing a hand-me-down to his ex best friend’s funeral.
A story about friendships told in a non-linear fashion.

He can hear his phone buzz in his pocket but he stands still looking at the back of the ambulance knowing that he’s going to have to clean the blood off all the equipment. He couldn’t stop looking at Nancy on the ride back, the small little splatters that rested on her cheek like a freckle, or the way that he watched her try and stop her hands from shaking, or how irritated her ear was because she kept trying to use her shoulder against it like it would help the ringing stop.

“You’re okay, just close your eyes.” Eddie’s whispers, and his fingers feel like magic. He wants to stay like this forever.
“I don’t know why I’m so fucked up.” Richie laughs, his fingers digging into the stuffed animal that doesn’t deserve it. He releases it because it doesn’t feel good and his arms fall at his side and they’re heavy. Everything is just so fucking heavy.

Richie spent years in the closet, only loving people in the dark too afraid to see what anyone actually looked like. Maybe he was afraid of finding himself, afraid that he might not like what he saw. Whenever he had tried to engage in anything in the past there was a voice that hindered him, it told him that he was dirty and that he didn’t deserve to be loved because he was too loud, too tall, too annoying. He took up too much space.
Richie bites down hard on his lip, watching the way Eddie moves in the kitchen and he looks back at Steve.
“I’m ready to come out.”

He had always used to come home from a long case with a pack of beer and he’d watch Die Hard alone. It never used to be a problem until everyone slowly started to couple off in his friend group, and even then it never really got to him until he got a glimpse of what it feels like to have someone to hang out with and actually like to be around with. It was like slowly over time his partnership with Amy had started to become something more. They were friends then—friends that hung out sometimes after work, and somewhere Jake wanted more than just being friends. He wanted everything that Amy could give him.

His father wraps his arms around him, and the embrace feels warm. It’s an embrace that he hasn’t felt in a long time. It’s like when he was a kid and something scary happened and his father just held him like nothing could ever hurt him because his father was there protecting him.
“It’s okay.” His father quietly whispers into his hairline. “It’s okay.”
He didn’t know how to tell him all the things that he wanted to say, like: I don’t know how to stop my thoughts from spiralling out of control. What if the medicine makes it worse? What do we do if things don’t get better? How do I live in a world that doesn’t have my dad in it?
