He tore his eyes from the horizon, however indescribable in its splendor, and instead settled his gaze on the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Kit Snicket was just as he remembered her, as if the events of the past twenty years had never transpired, as if she still loved him the way he could never bring himself to stop loving her. She smiled up at him, a weak expression so full of memories, and locked those eternally tempestuous eyes on his.
It was inevitable, all of this, that he knew. Inevitable that they would meet again, inevitable that he would end up here, inevitable that his life of villainy would culminate in blood and pain and regrets so powerful they threatened to drown him in the tears he hadn’t dared shed. It was inevitable that he would love her until the very end.
Inevitable, a word which here means both Olaf and Kit knew that neither of them would survive the hour."
