if there’s a joke behind all this, then Jax definitely doesn’t understand the punchline. Because if he, of all people, doesn’t find this funny, then Caine is really shitty at this.
He’s on his bed. The fake stars on his ceiling shine above him in an almost taunting way, as to remind Jax once more that the real thing is long gone, at least for him.
He knows that he’s supposed to sleep, but it keeps nagging at him. He let his mask break. In front of everyone. But he just couldn’t help it. He hadn’t had a slip up like that in so long. Since — … Well. Yeah.

What were the stages of grief again?
Denial, Jax remembers. He knows that one. It’s the first on the list, the one that clues people in that it’s developing grief in the first place. Not that he’s grieving. That was silly. And a straight up delusional take on his situation. He doesn’t grieve.
Cartoonish purple rabbits don’t grieve.
The dead can’t speak, the guilty don’t deserve to. Pomni has Thoughts™ and makes it Jax’s whole problem.

After sacrificing himself for the rest of the members of the circus to escape, Jax suddenly finds himself outside of the game and back in the real world.
Through the confusion of how he got uot and ended up here, he sees the signs of the others having successfully escaped but when faced with them why does he thinks it's best they believe he died?
And how the hell does he prevent them from recognizing his voice?

Summary
Jax finally did it. He apologized to everyone! But that's obviously not enough to change anything. Especially when the apology sounded so... disingenuously.
The fan-favorite asshole must be punished for his crimes. The circus members decided that the silent treatment is better than jail. Now Jax can't speak to others, or even hear them, at least until they forgive him. With time and effort, he can work his way through to earn their forgiveness and break the punishment's spell.
Well, in theory it sounds great, but it is Jax we are talking about. What do you mean he can't talk with others? What do you mean there is no audience for his snarky comments? What do you mean he has to befriend people to be able to speak with them again???
He actually wished they would've thrown him into a wacky jail instead.

It would be better if you read it first, but it's not completely necessary to understand the plot. Kinger and Jax relationship is established in the previous part though and you might want to take a look at that before you start reading this.
