Summary
Back when Captain Billy Cutshaw first arrived at Biltmore House, there was Frankie Reno, and the life they carved out around each other made madness tolerable. In the wake of Vincent Kane, his death, and the closure of the institute-- and the return, however shaky, of Billy's sanity, he just wants to keep that relationship, despite the mounting obstacles. His healing is still a journey, and he has both old and new traumas to address-- and instead of tackling that journey side by side with a man he's come to love, he's doing it while also learning how to take care of a dog.
Frankie, moved to the nearest reputable institution, struggles with feeling as if he's lost one of the only people he has in his life to a man who isn't even alive to want him, and with navigating his own instabilities and the question of whether or not it's possible-- or safe-- to hope for sanity.

It’s said so matter-of-factly. Mark could turn it over in his head for hours, search every crevice of the sentence and still find it devoid of a deeper emotion.
Why should he want to find anything more than the words themselves?
John doesn’t understand that the sour taste on Mark’s tongue, the venom seeping into the tone of his voice, isn’t spite. It’s regret. It could’ve been grief and that makes it all the more bitter to hold against the roof of his mouth. He keeps the thought in.
