"Where is it?"
"Oh, it's in um- Chennai? I don't know if I'm pronouncing it right, but it's a three day conference at Madras Medical College."
Samira Mohan hasn't been to her hometown in fourteen years. She also might have more that coworkerly feelings for Jack Abbot. These are truths, but when they collide in the form of a conference trip to Chennai, she discovers a whole new encyclopedia of facts within herself, which changes her perspective in ways she would have never imagined.

Summary
Welcome to your unofficial, HR-questionable manual on how to emotionally spiral, flirt badly (and then well), fall in love, and somehow come out the other side still professionally employed. This guide follows one very sleep-deprived, emotionally constipated attending (Jack) and one terrifyingly calm, brilliantly subtle resident (Samira) through five increasingly unhinged phases of “not flirting” that turn, eventually, into something real.

Summary
Samira is nothing if not a realist. She can accept, without rancor, that her feelings are hers alone, that they are not reciprocated and never will be. He’s her attending, he’s eleven years older than her – and, most importantly, she is nowhere near the caliber of woman that he deserves.
So she shouldn’t feel anything when he comes in one day, Al-Hashimi beside him, her hand resting on his back.

Summary
As a chronic insomniac, he has long given up on techniques to help him fall asleep. He has tried everything from meditation to prescribed medication, all to no avail, but he still humours her from time to time when she suggests he limits his screen time and coffee intake before bed, even when he knows it ultimately won’t work.
Given his circumstances, he is the only person she knows—aside from those currently working their shift, which is obviously not his case tonight—that is willingly up at insane hours of the night. She reasons it must not be easy to fall asleep when you feel the constant need to be vigilant, no matter how many years have passed since it was a necessity. She knows about the nightmares that make it that much harder for him to get continuous sleep for more than two hours at a time. And she knows that he will find every and any excuse to stay up when he doesn’t need to. Add in his nocturnal tendencies, and it is no surprise his sleep schedule is basically nonexistent.

Summary
Samira has a five-year plan: finish her residency, complete a fellowship, and continue her research into racial disparities in the ER. She wants to become the kind of doctor who wouldn’t miss the warning signs of a heart attack in a man like her father.
Samira and Jack have been seeing each other for almost a year, which is to say, they sleep together, know everything about one another, have keys to each other’s places, cook for each other, and Samira owns more of Jack’s clothes than her own.
But they’re not in a relationship. Samira refuses to be the resident who fell in love with an attending, and she won’t let anything distract her from her work.
There are no labels. It’s casual, it’s fun, it’s easy.
Right?
