Chapter 1: Tie My Shoes

Chapter Text

“Dolphin!” Shaun screamed as she ran through the mines.

Something was chasing her– she didn’t know exactly what it was, it looked human, but it definitely wasn’t human. Shaun knew that she wouldn't be able to outrun it, but there wasn’t anything else she could do. It was way too late to hide now.

Shaun was surprisingly a fast runner. She was never the one for sports, she always preferred doing arts, or writing a novel compared to running track or playing basketball. However, with the adrenaline running through her veins, she’s running faster than she ever thought she could.

In the distance, Shaun saw a door. It was wooden and clearly old. She wouldn’t be surprised if it broke apart from her just opening it. However, the door could potentially be the only thing that can save her from the thing chasing her.

She slammed the door behind her, shoving random objects from the old mineshaft to hopefully stop the thing from chasing after her. For now. “Dolphin?” she called out again. Still nothing. It didn't really surprise her, her and Dolphin split up ages ago by accident, they got split up in the forest when they were looking for help.

Shaun hesitated before she climbed up the rickety wooden stairs. They looked as if they were one step away from collapsing, and she didn't know if it would hold her weight.

Luckily, it did, and she found herself going through a tunnel until she finally found the exit. Or entrance. It doesn’t really matter. She was out. Finally,

“Shaun?” She heard an all so familiar voice call out.

“Dolphin?” She shouted, searching around the area for her. She bumped into Dolphin, and stumbled backwards with a grunt.

“Oh my god, i’ve been looking for you!” Dolphin exclaimed, a soft grin on her face. They were both relieved to see each other.

“You look like shit, what the fuck happened?” Shaun immediately responded. Shaun hadn’t even realised her own injuries on her body. The adrenaline rushing through her body caused her to not really notice her injuries. “So do you, Shaun.”

“No seriously Dolphin, what happened?” Shaun insisted. Dolphin had crimson red blood staining her face and clothes, however it didn't look like she actually had any injuries other than some minor bruises.

“I found Nem after we split up. We went back to the lodge and nobody was there, and then we got chased by some fucking creature! It wasn't even human.. It was like– I don't even know..” Dolphin trailed off her sentence.

“Where's Nem now?” Shaun asked. Dolphin gives her an apologetic look that seemed to explain everything.

Dolphin was quick to change the topic. She asked Shaun what happened to her.
Shaun looked worse than Dolphin. Her knees were scraped and her legs were littered with purple bruises. A claret red liquid stained Shaun's once pink sweater that she knitted herself. Her moon necklace that she never ever took off was missing.

There was blood oozing from her hairline, clumping some of her short brown hair onto her forehead. A scarlet red litters her arms, but Dolphin wasn’t completely sure if her arms were actually injured or not.

“Listen, I was chased by the same thing you were in the mines.” Shaun started, but Dolphin cut her off. “There are mines on this mountain?”

“Yeah, but they’re abandoned. That's not the point though. I was chased by whatever the thing was. And it almost got me, but I thankfully escaped." Shaun took a deep breath. She was out of breath from running so fast earlier, but also from talking so fast.

“Did the thing.. Kill Nem?” Shaun asked, quietly. Almost like she was too to hear Dolphins response. Dolphin just gave her a nod.

Suddenly, they hear a loud screech. Dolphin gripped Shaun's arm and they immediately ran. Dolphin is a way faster runner than Shaun, so she was practically dragging Shaun. They ran down the mountain towards the cable car.

Shaun stumbled over a stick, tripping over. Dolphin grabbed Shaun from underneath her arms and hauled her up. The monster behind them was slowly catching up. They ran towards the cable car.

They saw a very shaken cave sitting on the floor outside of the cable car. Stormz and Dumb were also there. The cable car keys were in Dumb's hands. Dolphin shouted at them to start the cable car.

Dumb scrambled to insert the keys and open the door to the cable car, all three of them rushing inside. Shaun and Dolphin just made it into the cable car before the door closed behind us. “Holy shit.”

Shauns stumbled onto the floor of the cable car, and Dolphin sat down next to Cave. Shaun picked herself up and sat down next to Dumb.

“Dolphin, Shaun, shit we thought you guys were dead.” Stormz breathed out, and Dumb elbowed his ribs, obviously reminding him that it's not the time to be telling them things like that. “Are you guys okay?” Shaun asked.

“As okay as we can be. I really hope that we didn’t leave any of the others behind.” Cave responded. Cave looked like shit. He was definitely not okay, no matter how much he refused to admit that he’s fine.
