This interpretation includes a lot of personal headcanons, and I’m posting it here mainly for archiving purposes.

Notes:

-Rex: Abandoned as a kid, grew up bitter and fed up with the world. With some government help, he made it through elementary school, but after that he basically lived on the streets. As a teenager, he lashed out and turned into an arsonist. Even after getting out of juvenile detention, he never really got his act together. The last fire he set was just some rundown shack—no one was inside—but then a kid who looked exactly like his younger self showed up at his door. Surreal. Creepy as hell.

On paper, he’s the kid’s guardian.He finds the kid annoying, but to stay out of jail, he has to put up with him. Now he’s bouncing between jobs, scraping together money for the kid’s tuition. Pretty miserable life.

By the way, he didn’t become an arsonist on purpose—it started as him trying to stand up for justice but going wrong. But burning down Rudy’s house was intentional—he just thought no one was living there.

-Rudy: A mysterious, deformed thirty-year-old genius hiding his real body in a shabby house. Somehow, he’s an engineering PhD with tons of patents, so money isn’t really a problem. He usually attends classes through robots, but secretly he’s been researching cloning technology. He sets his sights on a certain nobody—an unwanted delinquent with no family.

Right when he finally succeeds, his house gets burned down. In an emergency, he has no choice but to escape using the cloned teenage body. Eventually, he tracks Rex down and forces him to help him go to school—otherwise, he’ll report him for arson and manslaughter.

And now, he’s happily enjoying the school life he never got to experience before.
