Ryland Grace knows he will die in space somewhere in the Tau Ceti system, potentially not knowing who he is. It's not going well for him.
Rocky knows they will die out here in space, floating near silently and alone around the resistant star. It's not been going well for them.

Summary
The ship is completely out of fuel.
By the time they had realized there was a problem at all it was too late to do anything. The Taumeoba had torn through the ship. Through all of the fuel and all of the astrophage that had been repurposed as radiation protection. Rocky had spent so long trying to fix it and it had only left them injured. Now their only hope is that Grace will save their star, and maybe Earth will be able to send a ship and save Erid. They will be dead by then, but at least the mission won't have completely failed.
Their mind is not a very kind place to be in a doomed scenario, having spent decades imagining nearly every way they could fail their planet miserably. This had not been one they'd thought of. Now all they are left with are the things they'll miss and the crushing silence surrounding the ship.

Summary
Zoochosis refers to the patterns of behavior noted across many species in response to prolonged isolation within a cramped, unchanging environment. It often presents in the form of repetitive movements or vocalizations ranging from benign to self-destructive. Frequently performed without the subjects input nor knowledge.
Many humans have theories regarding widespread zoochosis symptoms amongst sentient life on their planet. Some mentioning crowding zoochosis, in which said symptoms presented due to overcrowded conditions and a lack of dynamic environment.
Eridians did not. The hum of the planet itself was never far from perception even in the space elevator. And the sound of other Eridians was a constant, ever changing comfort. No one from Erid was ever truly alone.

Summary
After the star eater solution has finally been implemented the world takes a collective moment to live without peril. Meetings are postponed, public offices are shut down, and events are rescheduled.
Rocky and Adrian find themselves with their first day at home together since Rocky has gotten back. And with Grace making promising growth in their recovery, but also required to spend a lot of time resting, Rocky is feeling a lot better about devoting their focus towards their mate for the next several hours. They sincerely hope they don't have to be the one to explained to Grace that "laying eggs next to each other" had been a generous euphemism like "sleeping together" or "Knowing one another."
