In the darkness, the estate remained in a state of desolate and neglect. Vines choked around cracked columns and into windows, the weeds had overgrown, and there was no mistaking the stark absence of life inside the iron wrought gates.
He wasn't just ready to kill the past, he's ready to make it a bloodied, pulsing, begging thing. Everything ahead is dead, burned soil and charred trees. He tossed the empty gasoline container on the ground. The past wouldn't just die, he would raze it. Any remaining remnants would be stamped ash under his heel.
Houses were always harder to burn.

She grunts as snow falls into her boots again with another step. "There's no Christmas tree in the cabin."
"So you're going to cut down a tree right now?"
"No! I'm going to decorate the one out here."
There is a pause. She's not looking at him, but she somehow knows that he's rolling his eyes at her. "I think you need to switch to water for the rest of the night."
(In which Ben Solo has no Christmas Spirit, but Rey absolutely, positively, needs to decorate a Christmas tree.)

Rey has to clench her thighs together to keep her need under control. She’s aching between her legs, a burn that only Ben can settle. But she won’t give in yet, not when she has all the control despite their positions. It’s sudden when she takes his hand in both of hers, sliding two of his thick fingers between her lips. There’s a gasp from both of them and Rey smiles, flicking her tongue over the digits and hollowing out her cheekbones. Ben flexes his fingers in her mouth, like he’s exploring, like he’ll find the Holy Grail on her tongue.
He opens his eyes to look at her, to watch Rey prostrate on her knees, his fingers between her lips like she’s wanton, her hands wrapped around his wrist like she’s begging for more. She’s watching him just as he’s watching her; their gazes a game of lust. They’re baiting each other to see who will be the first to break. It will always be Ben.

He can’t decide if he wants to fuck this girl or fight with her. Maybe both? Maybe at the same time?
“So—you’re upset,” he says with a nonchalant nod and discreet adjustment of his slightly too-tight khaki corduroys.
She blinks at him, her expression alternating between indignation and incredulity and flat-out fury.
He had been right about her being pretty beneath the intimidation tactics.

There is no personal tag on the bag. Apparently, like Ben, its owner was foolish enough to travel without one. But the LaGuardia sticker is still wrapped around the handle, and Ben curses himself for his stupidity. He should have checked the name before he left the airport.
Rey Kenobi.
There’s no address and no phone number. Just the very unhelpful barcode slashed across the sticker along with the flight information. Rey was flying from Seattle to New York. The same flight he was on. The same terminal, the same luggage conveyor. The same goddamn suitcase.
