A relationship dynamic sounded like something from a psychology textbook, not whatever chaotic, magnetic pull existed between him and Ilya. "What dynamic? Nothing like that is going on."

    Rose’s fingers froze against her glass. She studied Shane’s face. Watching the furrow between his brows, the way his jaw tensed like he was bracing for impact. He genuinely didn’t know. The realization hit her then. “Shane,” she said slowly, “you seriously don’t see it?”

    Nor did the fact that he got drafted to Ottawa, the team where Ilya Rozanov was already the biggest star.

    Or,
    An alternate universe where Shane is openly out as gay. Ilya is still closeted bisexual. And they both play for the same team- ie, Ottawa Centaurs.

    “Roz,” Svetlana says with a grin on her face, “this is J.J. and Shane. They are hockey players for the Montreal Voyageurs.”

    “Okay,” the man called Roz replies, seemingly unsure what to do with that information. He definitely isn’t impressed. “And they want tattoos, yes?”

    The Voyageurs win their third Stanley Cup. J.J., Hayden and Shane wonder about the definition of a dynasty and get a specialists' opinion about tattoos. Shane meets a mysterious tattoo artist named Roz and gets too honest about hockey life.

    Or: the tattoo artist Ilya AU that no one asked for.

    “I saw you with Rozanov earlier,” he mentions, trying to sound casual. “I was surprised he wasn’t immediately telling you how weak your backhand is.”

    Shane grins a little. “Oh, do you also think my backhand is weak, Hayden?”

    Well, it’s not the best part of Shane’s hockey skillset, but Hayden assumes that Shane knows this too. “I don’t think there’s anything about the way you play hockey that anyone should consider weak,” he says.

    “Thanks, Hayden,” Shane replies genuinely, like he isn’t the best player in the NHL. “Rozanov was fine. We were just catching up.”

    Does anyone just catch up with Ilya Rozanov? Is that possible without him chirping you? Hayden has never experienced this.

    Hayden is invited to his first All-Stars game in 2017 and he is very excited to go. As he gets to know the All-Stars from the other teams, makes fast friends with Carter Vaughn and even admits that Boston is kind of good, he also accidentally discovers that Shane is in a relationship. With Ilya Rozanov.

    In chapter 2, Ilya deals with the consequences of Hayden finding out as he slowly befriends Hayden, though he will of course deny this.
