Having a relationship in the Alliance is difficult. There are fraternization regs to uphold. However, the regs are a little more lenient when it pertains to married couples. Normally, they don’t serve on the same ship due to the possibility of the worst case scenario happening, as it does upon occasion, but in special cases it is possible to allow such instances, if there is a need. Especially when one such couple consists of a famous ‘war hero’ badass marine and a smartass pilot who is known to be the best in the Alliance fleet.
This is their story. It will encompass all three Mass Effect games and beyond and will describe how their relationship survives through; the hunt for a rogue spectre, reanimation by a terrorist organization, and eventual invasion of the Reapers. It will test everything that their relationship is built upon; romance, love, lust, laughter, terror, grief, family, and hope. There are a few other words that come to mind about these two; stubborn, smartass, determined, loyal, dedicated…soulmates.

A battle that is rushing him forward unheeded into death’s grip once again, with no end in sight. Or so it seems. After the exhaustion of curing the genophage and the numbness of fighting old enemies from the Citadel coup, Damien is ready to just let the inevitable happen when suddenly something stirs the air and sharpens his focus. Not understanding at first that this new obsession of his has heightened his awareness and made him more alert to every minute in his struggle of trying to live through the end of the war, he begins to have a flutter of hope. The hope starts to whisper in his ear of a love so great that it makes him grasp a hold of the lifeline with both hands and never let go.

My story takes place just after the jamming signal from Leviathan downs Shepard’s shuttle on the floating structure on the surface of Despoina.

Summary
This is Part 5 of the 'It's in the Little Things...' series. This vignette does not stand on its own. To understand the relationships, please read from Part 1.
This scene takes part after the Normandy is in transit to their next mission after leaving the Citadel and Shepard just finished the 'I Remember Me' side quest. This Part is rated 'E' for obvious reasons. Chapter 1 is safe, however, Chapter 2 is NSFW.
This Part continues the developing relationship between my protagonists. It also explores how coming to terms with one's past can help heal the heart and allow for new opportunities to arise, namely for Shepard, a love that tests the times.
**10/26/16: Due to my other fanfiction stories, Flutters of Whispers and Silent Unspeakable Memories, this Part will be the last for awhile, until I can sufficiently give it enough time to add to it. Don't worry, this is not the last time you will see Zyn and Kaidan. Thank you for your continued support.

6 Jul 2023: Wow. Nearly two years on, and we are fast approaching the end of what has turned out to be a behemoth of a series. That so many have followed (and even binged!) what must seem like an unending succession of chapters all this time will never cease to amaze me. Thank you all for reading, commenting, and dialoguing with me throughout!
As to whether I plan on writing anything else - I do. Whatever I write next will not, however, be linear (in terms of timeframe) as this work is. Rather, I am thinking of writing vignettes, to flesh out some of the 'background'/ 'between scene changes' stuff in Communications itself; in response to reader suggestion/ query. So, if you think there's some 'backstory' you'd like explored or interrogated a little more, drop me a note in the comments section, and we'll see where that goes!
